Weight & Balance: The Three Calculations Every Pilot Must Get Right
You learned weight and balance calculations in ground school. You know that if the numbers don't work, the plane doesn't fly—or worse, it flies just long enough to kill you.
But there are two other weight and balance calculations you should be running before every flight. Get any of the three wrong, and you might not make it home.
The Weight & Balance You Know
Every pilot understands this one. Center of gravity. Useful load. Moment arms. We compute it, we check it, we respect it. An overloaded aircraft with the CG out of limits is a death trap waiting for the right combination of circumstances.
This calculation is non-negotiable. No pilot in their right mind would skip it.
So why do we skip the other two?
The Weight & Balance in the Mirror
Here's an uncomfortable truth: the FAA cares whether your aircraft is within weight limits, but your body doesn't file a dispatch release.
Pilot obesity is a growing problem—and I mean that literally. Excess weight affects your ability to move in the cockpit, reach controls in an emergency, egress from a crashed aircraft, and withstand G-forces. It increases your risk of sleep apnea (hello, fatigue), cardiovascular events, and diabetes—any of which can end your flying career or your life.
Your third-class medical isn't a fitness certificate. It's a minimum threshold. You can be technically legal and still be physically compromised.
Living a balanced life isn't just good health advice. For pilots, it's an operational requirement.
Balance your weight through sustainable nutrition—not crash diets that leave you foggy in the cockpit, but consistent eating habits that keep you sharp and maintain a healthy body composition.
Balance your movement through regular exercise that builds the strength and flexibility you need for emergencies. Can you hold the rudder at full deflection? Twist around to check your six? Crawl out of a crumpled fuselage?
Balance your rest so you're actually alert when you fly. Sleep apnea from excess weight doesn't just make you tired—it makes you stupid in ways you can't perceive until it's too late.
Your aircraft has a maximum gross weight. So do you. The difference is, yours isn't printed in a POH, and nobody's checking it but you.
WAIT & Balance: The Calculation That Kills
The third weight and balance is the one pilots fail most often—and it has nothing to do with pounds or inches.
It's about learning to WAIT and balance your priorities.
You know the term: get-home-itis. That overwhelming pressure to make the flight happen despite deteriorating weather, mechanical issues, or your own fatigue. The urgent meeting. The family waiting. The hotel cost you don't want to pay.
I knew a pilot who died from this calculation.
He was a physician—an OB/GYN. A skilled, accomplished man with a beautiful family. One winter day, he was weathered in. Snow was falling. Conditions were clearly no-go.
But his patients were waiting. Women were having babies. He didn't want to let them down.
So he loaded his wife and two of their three children into the airplane and took off into a snowstorm.
He never arrived.
In a single decision, those babies lost their doctor. His patients lost their physician. His surviving daughter lost her father, her mother, and two siblings. All because a man who was brilliant enough to deliver new life into the world couldn't bring himself to wait one more day.
The cruelest part? Those patients would have understood. They would have waited. Every one of them would have traded a day's delay for their doctor's life.
The WAIT & Balance Checklist
Before you fly, run this calculation:
What am I rushing toward? Is it truly urgent, or does it just feel urgent? Will anyone actually suffer if I arrive tomorrow instead of today?
What am I risking? Not just your life—everyone on that plane, everyone who loves them, everyone depending on them.
Would I advise another pilot to go? If a student called you with this exact scenario, what would you tell them?
What's the REAL cost of waiting? A hotel room. A rescheduled meeting. A disappointed family member who will get over it by next week. Compare that to the cost of getting it wrong.
Get-home-itis kills pilots who would never dream of flying an overloaded aircraft. They'd compute weight and balance three times before departure, then launch into conditions that no calculation could make safe.
Three Calculations, One Life
Every flight requires three weight and balance checks:
The aircraft. Run the numbers. Respect the limits.
Yourself. Stay fit enough to fly safely and handle emergencies. Your body is part of the machine.
Your priorities. Learn to WAIT. Balance the pressure to go against the price of getting it wrong.
The pilot I told you about was smart, skilled, and dedicated. He got two of the three calculations right that day.
Two out of three isn't good enough.
